The handicap posting season at Useless Bay began March 1, and this is a good time for some reminders about handicaps and posting scores. The handicap system is unique to golf and allows players of differing abilities to compete on a fair basis. If all players promptly post all eligible scores, it is a very effective system. Using the GHIN App on your phone or other mobile device is an easy and timely way to post scores. When possible, please post scores hole-by-hole so that we may collect data to ensure all holes are handicapped correctly. The recent changes in the handicap holes from the Blue and White tees at Useless Bay were the result of analysis of hole-by-hole scores!
As Handicap Chair, I have been advised that some members may not be posting all eligible scores. You know who you are. (And so do we.)
- If you are behind on posting scores, now is the time to catch up. If you played this Winter in warmer climates, please ensure those scores have also been posted. Catch up now if you need to.
- Periodic random audits will be conducted throughout the posting season by matching Golf Shop tee sheets with scores posted in the GHIN system.
- If a player fails to post a valid score, the Handicap Committee may post the score without the player’s authorization. (See Section 8-4b of the USGA Handicap Manual.) In egregious cases, the committee may post a penalty score, make a direct handicap index adjustment, or bar a player from competition at the Club! Please don’t let it come to that – promptly post ALL eligible scores!
If you’re not sure if you can post a score or not, please reference the USGA Handicap Manual available online or talk to one of the pros in the Useless Bay Golf Shop.
