Turf Tip: Repairing ball marks this time of year

As the weather conditions decrease in temperature, so do the turf conditions on the putting greens. Improperly repaired or neglected ball marks leave raised spots of the turf on the putting greens. These spots are scalped during mowing, resulting in unsightly bare marks throughout the winter. Failure to repair ball marks properly may result in depressions, loss of surface smoothness, and weed invasion. Please do not pull up the turf, which causes shearing of the roots – twist and turn in. Signs will be posted in the Golf Shop on How to Fix Ball Marks properly; please take these into consideration. When repaired properly, the healing process will recover more quickly and the putting surface will be smooth.

Course Information

Our crew continues to do an outstanding job in maintaining the golf course along with Mother Nature cooperating for dry conditions. Besides maintaining the golf course to the best that we can, we have focused on several projects, including:

Installing the fountain in the right of #1 pond

Installing the fountain in the right of the #1 pond

  1. Installed the fountain on the right of #1 pond.
  2. Cut sod for the Men’s Club Volunteers to install around the edge of the pond liner to prevent erosion.
  3. Added 32 tons of topsoil around #1 pond – leveled the topsoil out and seeded/fertilized it.
  4. Added hay bales to the right of #1 pond to prevent erosion.
  5. Added cores – seed – and fertilizer to the area where we cut sod.
  6. Stabilized the hillside on the left of #8 ditch.
  7. Started the drainage project on the right of #18 tee complex

The Men’s Club Volunteers installed sod around the edge of the pond liner to prevent erosion; picked up the tree/debris behind #1 green; raked and picked up pine needles, apples, pears, and leaves throughout the golf course; cut out a new walk path on the hillside of #6 tee complex; started removing some of the Asp trees on the left of #9 rough; and continue to weed, prune, and remove vegetation around the Clubhouse flowerbeds.

I expect frost this month, so please keep an eye out for our Winter Green Policy in the Golf Shop.

Course reminders

  1. Please play our temporary greens as ground is under repair. This will eliminate any divots in these areas.
  2. Please observe the signs at #1 and #10 Kiosks and the Golf Shop if power carts are on the paths or the fairways for the day. Just a reminder that if power carts are on the fairways, please keep the cart parked at least 30 yards away from the green and tee complex to minimize compaction and thinning of turf around the complex. Thank you.
