Useless Chatter

October 2021

Notes from the General Manager

jasonYoungsman

September brought some significant changes to the Club. Karen Wix, who’s been our wonderful accounts receivable manager for 33 years, retired in September. We will really miss her. For those of you who’ve had the pleasure of working with Karen, you know what a kind, competent manager she’s been. With 33 years at Useless Bay, she has lived through so many changes, and has been invaluable to me and others as an unofficial historian for the Club. We wish her well in retirement! Karen graciously helped to train Jacque Baldwin (Member Services Manager) in the accounts receivable needs of the Club so that we will have a smooth transition as Jacque assumes Karen’s responsibilities. Jacque will continue to be the Member Services Manager as well.

The Useless Board has also changed. Three retiring board members (Colin Fleming, Bill Dana, and Jan Tepper) have been a pleasure to work with and have been part of the team that has guided the Club through the COVID changes while ensuring that the Club continues to move forward with improvements and innovations. I’d like to welcome the three new board members: Eileen Brennan, Steve Davis, and Bob McClain. And I’d like to acknowledge the new Board President, Toni Anderson. I look forward to working closely with Toni and the board to ensure that our Club remains successful and continues to get better and stronger.

Kindly,

Jason Youngsman

New Member Spotlight: Pavel Soukenik and Angela Cummings

Pavel_Angela_Aug2021

We are very excited to join the UBGCC! Pavel is originally from the Czech Republic and moved to the U.S. in 2009, while Angela is a Washington native who grew up in Kirkland, WA. We bought a home in Langley in 2018, and we love Whidbey and everything it has to offer − from the gorgeous natural scenery and wildlife to the interesting and compassionate people who reside and vacation here.

Pavel is an avid chess player and enjoys learning new games. He is currently studying and learning Go. Angela is a photographer, writer, and gardener. She spent the last two years building trails on their property and publishing her first juvenile fiction book. Angela also enjoys board and card games – especially backgammon, pinochle, and gin. We are looking forward to spending time at the Club, where we hope to play and learn new games (including golf!) and meet more people with whom we share this beautiful Island.

New Member Spotlight: Anne Preston and Kathleen Conroy

Kathleen and I purchased our first home in the Useless Bay Colony several years ago to try out life on the Island. We liked it so much, we moved here full-time last year. I am learning golf for the first time (late in life), so we joined as Clubhouse members so I can work on getting better. We already use and enjoy the pickleball courts and fitness center. We look forward to getting to know more members and taking full advantage of the facilities.
